Obituary for Clifford Gislason

Clifford Gislason
It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Cliff at the age of 71 years.

Cliff is survived by his wife Sylvia, daughter Christa (Dennis), grandsons Carter and Ryland, brothers Robert (Reta), Bruce, Leslie (Donna), several nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

He was predeceased by his parents Einar and Lilja Gislason, his in-laws Kris and Phyllis Sigvaldason, brothers-in-law Raymond Sigvaldason and Halldor Finnson, numerous Aunts and Uncles.

Cliff grew up in Arborg, MB and worked for Canadian Pacific Railway for several years as a station agent. The indoors were not for him. He went on to work construction and became a Structural Iron Worker, being a proud Member of Ironworkers Local 728. He worked on jobs throughout Canada and the United States, including many Hydro dams in the north.

Hockey was his passion. He played for local teams in Arborg and Riverton and went on to play junior hockey with the Fort William Canadians. He loved hunting with his buddies Kenny and Halli and smoking fish with Joe. When living in Thompson, MB he along with Sylvia and Christa spent many hours in their boat fishing, and was a true outdoorsman.

Cliff loved to travel. He and Sylvia especially loved cruising, going on cruises to the Caribbean, Europe, Russia, Israel and Mexico. They also did many road trips, visiting all Canadian Provinces and all but six States in the United States. In September they went to Iceland and toured the country, seeing where their ancestors came from. They also had many fun trips with their close friends, Pat and Dennis Dick.

His grandsons were his pride and joy. He rarely missed a hockey, basketball or baseball game. He and Sylvia took the grandsons on a Cuban cruise on Spring Break, making wonderful memories.

He also loved working with wood. He and Raymond had so many good times at the sawmill. From the lumber they created keepsakes. Carter and Ryland spent many hours in his workshop with him. They each made a cabinet with Papa’s help.

Cremation has taken place and a private graveside service will take place at a later date.

Donations can be made to the Icelandic River Community Foundation – Recreation Fund, Box 159, Arborg, MB R0C 0A0.
