Obituary for Winfried Armin Glas

Winfred Armin Glas

Peacefully on May 10, 2023, Winfried ended his journey on Earth and reunited with his wife Johanna in Heaven. During this time Bruce, Tabitha, Travis and Melvina with Ember, Haley, and Tyson kept him company.

Dad was born October 10, 1934, in Germany and managed to survive hardships during a war and the rulings of a communist governing dictatorship. In 1959 he managed to find a way out (escape), along with two of his brothers and made their way to Canada. He left behind five siblings, his mother, and a former wife and three children and it broke my Dad’s heart that they were unable to flee with him at the time and later.

Arriving in Canada, Dad self-taught the English language and found work easily since he was a jack of all trades and had many talents.
However culinary was his calling and he first started prepping meals for the airlines. He then worked at a German restaurant where he met Johanna, catered his own wedding on October 10, 1964 and started a family. Together throughout the years, they ran a restaurant in Northern Manitoba and later owned two restaurants, both in Winnipeg. Times were great, Johanna and Winfried found time to enjoy family vacations, curling, playing cards which, he mostly lost at but was a good sport, dancing, gambling trips to the USA, and on the top of the list was having family gathering for any reason.
Winfried was always looking for new challenges and came across property in Inwood that started off as a vacation home. It slowly grew from hobby farm to permanent full-time country living.
Hosting all two and four legged animals, that loved to snack in their garden, but leaving enough for freezing and canning.

Unfortunately farm accidents happened and Winfried happened to be in the midst. A vehicle accident where he almost lost his leg and on a separate occasion where he sustained broken ribs from a charging new mother cow. Lastly having being kicked in the head and to top it off, he also suffered a heart attack. Thankfully being a tough European he bounced back. But as time went on, new challenges arose and in 2019 Dad was admitted into a care home.
Unfortunately, things did not get better due to lockdowns and isolation that ultimately took a toll mentally and physically to the point his body and mind broke. But throughout these times, he was always positive and witty.
He never complained and was always agreeable going with the flow. We were fortunate that he was able to meet his newly great granddaughter, Ember, before his passing. Thanks to the staff at Rosewood Lodge and Dr Graham.

A private family interment will be held at the Stonewall Cemetery.

John 5:24
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

May 10 was a bright beautiful warm day and the sky later opened up with thunder and rain revealing the rainbow of God’s promise.

To me, God answered my prayer by showing me this sign. Thanks be to God!
