Obituary for William Frederick Swan

William (Bill) Frederick Swan

November 26, 1946 - January 21, 2023

It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Bill Swan at his home on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at the age of 76.

Bill was predeceased by his parents James (Jim) and Zylpha (Cook), brother-in-law John Goertzen and his son Chris, also brother-in-law Gordon Cairns.

Leaving to mourn his loss is his sister Patricia Cairns of Winnipeg, numerous cousins, friends and neighbors.

Bill was born on November 26, 1946 at his family’s home. He attended school at Woodlands and Warren Collegiate. As a young fellow Bill enjoyed playing baseball and hockey and was a member of 4-H. He also did his share of chores on the family dairy farm.

In his younger days, Bill coached baseball at Woodlands and also umpired many ball games. As an avid hockey fan, he watched many games at Warren Arena and also was a season supporter of the Winnipeg Jets over the years. Farming was Bill’s passion, and he was still operating his farm right up to his death. He never hesitated to help a neighbor or friend in need.

Bill was a true advocate in whatever he believed, and politics was no exception. For numerous years, he served in various positions of the Progressive Conservative Party for Lakeside Constituency. He was a true leader and always showed his feelings toward his passions.

In 1991 Bill served as President of Rockwood Victoria Coop and was also a director for three years prior to this. He became Chairman of Dairy Farmers of Manitoba in 1992 and served on this board for several years. He also was an executive member for Dairy Producers of Canada.

Bill’s morning routine was not complete without his stop at the local coffee shop dressed in his usual farmer attire of coveralls and rubber boots. His conversation always started by chatting about the weather. He loved to tease the waitresses about taking so long to come around with the coffee pot. His coffee shop buddies could attest that Bill was very vocal when it came to topics regarding politics. He will be dearly missed.

Cremation has taken place. Celebration of life will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Stonewall Legion, 459 Main Street, Stonewall.
