Valerie Ann Buchanan
It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Valerie Ann Buchanan on January 5, 2023, at Stonewall General Hospital. Left to mourn are her husband, George Buchanan, daughter Nancy, son Chad (Xiaoling), grandkids Brittny, Hana, Jadyn, Ridley and her great-grandsons, Kinsey, and Kai, along with nieces and nephews and many friends. Valerie is predeceased by her mother and father, Goldie Barton (nee Thompson) and Hanford Barton, as well as her sisters, Jennifer Lynn Prefontaine (nee Barton) and Bernadette Ellen Kafka (nee Barton).
Valerie was born in Hardwood, NB on March 31,1948 to Hanford and Goldie Barton. She was the oldest of three girls. Valerie moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1961 and lived in Charleswood. George and Valerie met at a legion in 1973 and were married on September 28,1974 and then they moved to Notre Dame De Lourdes. Shortly after, their first child came along, Nancy, in July of 1975. Their son, Chad, followed not too long after in December of 1977. They raised their family there until they moved in 1981 when they relocated to Stonewall to be closer to the big city. Valerie was a health care aide to many individuals for years until she started working at Rosewood Lodge in 2004.
During these years, her first two grandchildren were welcomed into the world. Nancy’s daughters Brittny (1993) and Hana (1999). Chad and his wife, Xiaoling, were married 2005. In 2007, the whole family took an exciting adventure to China to celebrate the marriage. Chad and Xiaoling’s daughter, Jadyn was born in 2010 and son, Ridley in 2013. Valerie loved to spend every holiday and birthday with her family, even if she would never admit her age. Valerie started working at Stonewall General Hospital in 2015 and stayed there until she retired in 2018. Her first great-grandchild was born in 2020, Brittny’s son, Kinsey. Family time was very important to her, and you’d often find her at one of her children’s/grandchildren’s home spending quality time with them. She had a passion for action movies, her favorites were Fast & Furious, and she always found luck at the casino or the local VLT’s.
Valerie will be missed dearly and remembered fondly.
There will be a come and go Celebration of Life held at the Stonewall Legion on January 15, 2023, between the hours of 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
We wish to extend our sincerest gratitude to the staff at the Stonewall General Hospital. In leu of flowers, please donate to the Heart & Stroke Foundation at www.heartandstroke.ca or call 1-877-882-2582.
