Obituary for Sophie Podaima
SOPHIE (SHWETZ) PODAIMA
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Sophie on Sunday, May 29, 2022 at 97 years of age
Left to mourn her passing are her sons Lloyd and Mel (Joan) and daughters in law Janet, Linda and Dale.
She also leaves seven grandchildren and ten great grand children. Sophie is survived by one sister Joyce, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years Lenard, sons Burt and Gordie, her parents and nine siblings.
Sophie was born in 1925 in Zbaraz, Manitoba on the family farm. She came from a family of 11 children and like all young people of her time, she had to work long and hard helping on the farm. She was the oldest surviving person of the Zbaraz area, where she grew up.
Sophie and Lenard married in June 1949. They farmed for a while by broad Valley and welcomed four boys into their family.
In 1960 they moved to Fisher Branch and bought the Northern Cafe which they operated until 1983. They retired to Arborg for a number of years and later moved to Teulon. There Sophie enjoyed a large circle of good friends, and many senior social activities and crib tournaments.
Cooking was one of her favorite pastimes.
There was always lots of perogies, holopchi, borscht and of course her famous butter tarts for us all to enjoy,
Sophie will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will take place at a later date.
