Obituary for Orest Demianiw

OREST DEMIANIW

Orest Demianiw passed away peacefully in his home on December 26, 2021, at the age of 76. Left to grieve his loss are his sweetheart Gladys, son Dane (Melanie), grandchildren Berlin, Zorayan, Bradley (Danika), Breanne (Austin) plus many extended family and friends. First to greet him at the gates were his late wife, Sophie and daughter, Cindy.

Hidden behind that gruff exterior was a soft and caring man filled with love for his family. He was the most generous and selfless man; he’d do absolutely anything for you, you just had to ask. A day didn’t pass that he wasn’t calling someone to check-in - either his son, grandkids, sisters, brothers or friends. His heart swelled for his grandchildren - loving each beyond words; there is no doubt about how much he loved them. We know that each of them will think about the warmth of those great big “Gege hugs” when they’re missing him the most.

Big “O” was also passionate about his trade - anyone who tasted his bacon, kielbasa & pepperoni would agree that there was none better. He was so proud of his newly refurbished smokehouse at the Romaniw residence and spent countless hours there doing what he loved.

For seven decades, Orest explored the outdoors; spending many memory filled weekends with Sophie, Cindy & Dane in their slide-in-camper and fishing in his little red & white boat; Moose Lake & Lake St. George were their favourite places to get away. In the last decade, he even persuaded Gladys, to share in his love for the great outdoors by upgrading to a 5th wheel, or spending a few nights at Dane seasonal site. Breanne & Bradley remember playing baseball, weeding in the garden and circular snowmobile rides around the yard in Teulon.

Another joy and subject of many stories were the hunting trips to Chatfield and Snowflake, with son Dane, brothers, nephews and more recently with his grandsons, Bradley and Zorayan - he loved being a part of this family tradition, even if he couldn’t push-bush like he used to.

We can’t forget the time he treasured with his girls. He always made time for his grand daughters - staying connected with weekly phone calls, and his newly acquired FaceTime skills, to Breanne in Ottawa and watching Berlin dance, sing and show him her Barbies. He and Gladys spent many nights dancing the night away, sharing meals or just curled up to watch TV. He sure loved his girls.

“Our hearts are broken at your sudden passing. We thought we had more time for Gege hugs, a ‘quick-coffee”, weather reports and hunting stories. We hope you know how much you meant to us and how much we love you. Had we known it was the last time we’d see you, we never would have let go. Love-yous”.

Due to current restrictions, the funeral at MacKenzie Funeral Home and burial at St. Stephen’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in Pleasant Home will be for immediate family. Please take few moments on January 5, from where ever you are, to remember Orest and pray for strength for the family.
