Obituary for Nelda Carey

Nelda Eileen Carey
(nee Clifford)

On January 24, 2021, peacefully in her sleep, at the age of 96, Nelda moved to Heaven.

She is survived by her daughter Donna Green of Stony Mountain, her son David Carey of St. Albert, Alberta and her “2nd son” son-in-law Andrew McKechnie of Lake Chapala, Mexico. She will be sadly missed by grandchildren, Katelyn (Chris) Leczynski, Tristan (Kim) Carey, Tracy (Steve) Carnegie, Heather McKechnie, and Kingsley Green; 4 Great grandchildren Emily, Richard, Aurora , Annika, as well as many foster grandchildren whom she loved dearly - Jolene, Crystal, Chelsea, Ali, Veronica, RoseAnne, Jonathan and many more, plus many nieces and nephews scattered around the world.

She was predeceased by her husband Neville in 2016, daughter Elizabeth (Beth) McKechnie in 2005, and infant daughter Sharon in 1950 as well as all 8 of her siblings and their spouses. She was the last of that entire generation.

Nelda was born October 27, 1924, in Teulon, MB to Charlie and Hattie Clifford. She graduated high school in Teulon, then moved to Winnipeg to work in a bank near the corner of Portage and Main. She was introduced to a handsome young man in the Air Force named Neville. He was stationed in Portage la Prairie for training, then he moved back to Regina. After writing weekly letters for over a year, Mom moved to Regina where they were married. They almost spent 68 years together as best friends.

Mom loved to bake, sew, knit, and cook wonderful meals. Our house was always warm and welcoming. She was very generous with her time and possessions to anyone in need.

When Dad retired, they moved to various locations in BC, but returned to Winnipeg area once the grandchildren started to arrive.

The last couple of years of her life, she was a resident of Tudor House in Selkirk. A big thank you to all the cheerful and loving staff for the great care they gave Mom.

Due to Covid restrictions, a small family service was held February 2nd at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel in Stonewall - Pastor Henry Ozirney officiated.

Thank you to MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall and Chapel Lawn, Winnipeg for their kindness and compassion at this time. Also, an eternal thank you to Pastor Henry Ozirney from New Life Baptist in Stonewall for leading Mom and Dad to our Lord Jesus.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Nelda’s memory to New Life Church, Box 905, Stonewall, MB, R0C 2Z0.
