Obituary for Lois Geraldine Rutherford

Lois Geraldine Rutherford

On the 9th of October, the day after they would have been married for 75 years, Dad paid Mom a visit and danced her to heaven.

Lois leaves with wonderful memories, three sons, Larry (Lena), Randy, and Rick, and two daughters Wendy and Jo-Ann (Rick). She also has ten grandchildren: Miranda (Michael), Ryan (Shannon), Ashley, Michael (Stephanie), Scott (Filipa) Chad, Kara, Shea (Breanna), Kathy (Rob) and Steve (Casey), and twelve great grandchildren: Jonathan, Andrew, Henry, Alex, Jack, Sadie, Judah, Nevada, Robbie, Austin, Sierra, and Talon.

Lois was born on October 19th, 1927, (she passed at 19:27 on the 9th) to Ben and Mary Revel on a farm east of Eden, Manitoba and is the last of her generation in both the Revel and Rutherford clans. An era has ended for the various cousins, nieces and nephews who also survive her and hold fond memories of hosted family get-togethers with huge amounts of food and visiting. Her freshly baked buns were an institution at all of the events.

Lois loved her family and was so proud of them. She attended all the sports games, concerts and graduations and transported kids all over the Interlake and Winnipeg. When she wasn’t actually attending events, she was regaling everyone with all of our exploits.

In later years, she sold ice cream at the Prairie Dog site and then became a guide at the Heritage House with Donna and Dorothy. She loved to tell her stories to all who ventured off the train and could describe what every utensil was used for. Hugs from train personnel were a highlight of her day.

Outspoken and strong minded, she was a force in the community. She was active in the United Church, at both the local and presbytery level. She served in most of the leadership positions in the Women’s Institute and actively recruited any young woman who she met in the community. She was a member of the Recreation Club and helped at all the fundraising dinners and events.

She and Jack loved to travel. Early on they toured the UK, Australia, Canada, and the US. They went on many winter trips to Portugal, Tunisia, Hawaii, Arizona, the Caribbean, and then became snowbirds in Victoria. She even ventured to Victoria alone for a couple of years after Dad passed away.

Thank you to the home care workers at Stonewall Place, the health care aides and nurses at Red River Place and physicians who had her in their care.

Mom’s last adventure has begun. I am sure the inhabitants of heaven are lining up for her baked goods and cheese biscuits! May the buns be with you, Mom!

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 15, at 1:00 pm at the MacKenzie Funeral Home in Stonewall. There will be a reception at Grosse Isle Hall afterwards to share memories and some dainties.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Rosser Grosse Isle Pastoral Charge, co Box 16 Rosser, MB R0H1E0; Grosse Isle Heritage Site; Cancer Care Manitoba or a charity of your choice.

MISS ME BUT LET ME GO

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that once we shared
Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone.
It's all part of the master plan
A step on the road to home.
So when you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends you know.
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me, but let me go.
