Obituary for Irene Gulay

Irene Gulay (nee Abas)

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother Irene Gulay at the Personal Care Home in Arborg, MB on May 13, 2022, at the age of 93.

Irene is survived by her Sons, Marvin (Evelyn), Ronald (Janice) and Ivan (Brenda); grandchildren and great grandchildren: Kevin (Eva), Andrew and Clara; Stephanie (Malik), Jokha, Samar and Anis; Jason (Lana); Ashley (Graham); Amber (William), Cecelia, Taylon and Thea; Brett (Ingen), Evan and Breanne; Cara (Brad), Emma; and Derric, as well as her brother Ernest (Anne) Abas and numerous relatives and friends. Irene was predeceased by her husband Andrew in 2003.

Mom was born on February 24, 1929, in Hodgson, MB. She grew up there on their family farm and married Andrew in 1952. After living in Winnipeg for a few years, they moved to a farm in the Sylvan area where they raised their three sons. Mom worked very hard during these years raising turkeys, working with the cattle which she loved and gardening; as well as working off farm from time to time, not to mention raising her family. And raise them she did; she would do anything for her three sons; always there whenever they needed anything. She loved to cook; her fried chicken was second to none as were her pastries and pies.

Many Sundays she spent at the lake with her boys when they were young; always with a hamper full of food and yes, it contained her famous chicken. Once her boys left home, they still spent many, many mornings around her kitchen table while she fried them bacon and eggs, not to mention dinners and suppers including meals to the field. The family will never forget her feasts on those special holiday days where we could all gather around her large dining room table and enjoy her labours of the day.

She was a big fan of old country music, Georgie Jones being a favorite; and she enjoyed old-time dancing. Mom was always graceful on the dance floor. She knew all the songs and enjoyed singing them as well.
She loved her Grandkids dearly and they loved her. There was no shortage of treats at her house, and they all knew where to find them. She spent many enjoyable hours playing with them; something they will never forget.

Her home was never empty. Seldom a day went by that someone didn’t stop in to visit. Her coffee pot was always on, and she served many meals to friends and neighbors that she welcomed into her home. She always had time for a visit even if she spent it checking her stove to make sure she had enough for everyone to eat. Mom, you will be missed beyond measure!

Honorary pallbearers will be Mom’s Grandchildren.

An invitational service will be held for Mom on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at the Heritage Centre in Arborg, MB, with interment to take place at the Sylvan Community Cemetery, Sylvan, MB.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mom’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Arborg Personal Care Home for their support and kindness throughout Mom’s time spent in the Home. It was greatly appreciated.
