Obituary for Helen Edmand

Helen Catherine Edmand

It is with profound sadness, that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mom, Helen Catherine Edmand (nee Poulios), at age 91, on Thursday, March 25th, 2021, after a diagnosis of lung cancer earlier in the week.

Mom was born in Edmonton, AB on October 4, 1929. She was predeceased by our father, Ray Edmand, her parents, Gregory and Catherine Poulios, as well as her brothers Bill and Alex, and her granddaughter-in-law Taylor Dibley.

She is survived by her children, Greg, Arlene (Jeff), Murray (Chris), Bill, and grandchildren, Melissa, Jordan, Juline (Adam), Scott, Lisa (Korde), McKenna and her great-grandkids, Jayden, Aaryn, William, Jasmine, Mya, Owen, Jack and Theo, who will all miss “Golfing Gramma”.

Growing up in Edmonton, Mom was active with the Westmount Speed Skating Club, as well being an Ambassador for the Edmonton Teen Club, where she welcomed Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent and various delegates to visits to the city. In 1946, she was chosen to be on the Eatons Junior Fashion Council. She very proudly worked for the Edmonton Eskimo Football Club during the 50’s, which caused quite the rivalry between her and Dad, who was a HUGE Winnipeg Blue Bomber fan. He finally converted her to the Blue & Gold side.
Mom caught Dad’s eye in Sylvan Lake, AB, where she liked to hitchhike to so she could listen to the music. She even had an autograph from Tommy Dorsey. They were married in 1953, raised us 4 kids in Edmonton, and Winnipeg, which was no easy task for her, as Dad was away a lot with his many RCAF tours.

She always ran a loving, organized house, where dinnertime was strictly enforced. Every Boxing Day, she hosted a 5 course Greek food extravaganza, to celebrate her Greek roots, which the family always looked forward to.

She was very involved with YBC (Bowling) Program run out of Village Inn Bowl & Cue for over 12 years. She was a recipient of the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo, for her volunteer efforts in coaching the Junior Girls teams at the Village Inn and Rossmere Lanes to National Championships in ’72 and ’73. She coached many boys and girls’ teams over the years.

Mom and dad were members at Breezy Bend Golf & CC for over 40 years, where she won the Senior Ladies Club Championship one year, and to Dad’s consternation, had a hole-in-one. She loved her ladies’ days, where she made many lifelong friends. Her and dad spent many winter months away golfing, in San Antonio, Florida and Arizona.

Mom was always so proud of her gardens and flower beds at 918 Parkhill Street. People often stopped and admired her work. She loved to knit, cross stitch and her ceramics decorated their home and were gifted to family over the years. Their love of pets became a series of Boston Terriers. After decades of dogs, they were very surprised to discover themselves “cat people”, when Pussa became their last pet.

Our hearts are broken, but we know she is at peace, golfing and dancing with dad.

As per mom’s request, there will be no formal service. When able, the family will hold a private gathering to commemorate Mom and Dad’s ashes.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Cancer Care Manitoba or Winnipeg Humane Society.
