It is with deep regret that our sister Freida Johnson went to be with her Heavenly Father Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. at the Concordia Hospital, Winnipeg. She went peacefully in her sleep with family by her bedside, after a short battle with cancer.
Freida was born in Stonewall in 1946 she was pre-deceased by her parents Florence and William Johnson of Stonewall, sister Alice (Abe) and brothers Ken, George (Sigrid), Bill, David and James, brothers-in-law Frank, Allan, David, sisters-in-law Helen and Shirley.
She will be sorely missed by her sisters Evelyn, Ida, Edna, Janice (Robert) Huggan; brothers Charlie, Philip, Tom (Bev), Norman (Gemma), Leonard (Joanne), Joe (Connie); our adopted sister Agnes Friesen; sisters-in-law Doreen and Signe; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews which she clearly adored.
Freida Johnson was privileged to be the twelfth child of a family of seventeen, the sixth youngest of a non-church going family. However, the children were allowed to go to Sunday School in a Presbyterian Church. At the age of nine Freida accepted the Lord as her personal savior after Sunday School. Later that year, she attended the Canadian Sunday School Mission camp at Gimli, MB where she sensed God’s call on her life for missionary service. God’s hand had been on her since those earliest years.
After graduating from high school, she worked briefly, but responded to God’s call for Bible training. She attended Prairie Bible Institute of Three Hills, AB and graduated in 1970. Her interest was to go to the mission field. But God had other plans for the immediate future. With her background and indebtedness to the Canadian Sunday School Mission, she worked twelve years in Canada gaining valuable practical experience.
Her sense of call to foreign mission remained strong in her heart. She was accepted by TEAM (The Evangelical Alliance Mission) and was sent to Edinburg, Texas, to take the one year missionary Spanish language program. There she experienced firsthand a love of the Hispanic people and the commitment of RGBI to equip missionaries in both culture and language. Little did she dream that she would later be associated with that missionary training institute that celebrates 60 years in 2006.
Her missionary assignment was to Venezuela, but she was sent for six months to Baja California, Mexico in preparation for her field service. Again, she served twelve years in Venezuela. God led her back to Canada and to her recent ministry of another twelve years in direct involvement in that good ministry to which God, she owns her own salvation.
You can readily see that in three series of twelve years she has served the Lord in Canada, Venezuela and in Canada once again.
Frieda was also very active since returning to Canada she spent many of her summers attending camps for young and old alike at various communities across Manitoba. Freida worked at One Hope Canada and Rio Grande Bible Institute Centre and finally by Charis centre retiring this past July.
