Obituary for Donat Joseph Chartrand

Donat (Don) (Piton) Chartrand – May 19, 1931 – November 14, 2020

On Saturday, November 14, 2020 Donat passed away peacefully, at Stonewall hospital, at the age of 89 years with family by his side. He is predeceased by his wife Jeanette, his parents Ludovic and Maggie, brother Norman and sisters Berthe, Therese, Denise, Rita and Patsy. Left to treasury his memory are his children Marc (Therese), Huguette, Lea (Allan) Gaudry. His grandchildren Tanya (Jody), Jean Claude (Jane), Crystal (Brad), and Courtney (Trevor). His great-grandchildren Taylor (Austin), Ian, Anaka, Beau and Sadie. Brother Alfred (Therese), sisters Yolande and Donalda, brother- in-law Raymond Millar, sister-in-law Paulette Guiboche and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donat was born and lived all his life in his beloved St Laurent, MB, a town he believed to be the best place in the world to live. He worked many years for the City of Winnipeg in construction during the summer months and as a Commercial Fisherman on Lake Manitoba during the winter months. In June 1967 together with his wife Jeanette they took over one of the local general stores and operated it as Chartrand’s Grocery for 32 years, retiring in August 1999 when he and Jeanette sold the business.

Dad enjoyed spending time with his family in particular his grand children and great-grandchildren and there was always a looney or tooney in his pocket for them when they came by for a visit. He gave them endless rides in the wagon hitched to the riding lawn mower, build them snow slides in the back yard, played hide n seek outside and in the house (to Grandma’s chagrin), showed them his favorite hunting spots and took them for truck rides as long as they thought it was “cool” to go with him. Let’s be honest how many kids want to drive around endlessly at 25 KPH on back roads? Throughout his life Dad loved going for long drives around the Interlake taking in the scenery, checking out marshes, lakes, good hunting spots and many other interesting areas along the way. Listening to old time country music on CFRY on that ever present portable radio was something he did even during his last days with us. And then there was his daily beers served warm (yuk!) and it had to be the same kind, he didn’t do change well! Raise a glass of Sleeman Clear 2.0 when you have a minute, chilled is fine.

Our family would like to thank all the staff who cared for Dad at the St Laurent Assisted Living Centre for this past year. Staying in St Laurent was very important to him and he would not have been able to do so without the Centre and its staff. Thank you to Dr A Leylek and his staff Jennifer and Danielle at CancerCare, and to Dr Wayne Hicks and all the staff at Stonewall Hospital for taking such wonderful care of our Dad. Your professionalism and compassion was very much appreciated. And last but not least, thank you to all the folks (too numerous to mention) of St Laurent who ran errands for him, took him out for drives, answered his nightly phone calls and generally looked out for him even when they had the unfortunate luck of being stuck driving behind him as he puttered at 25 KPH in front of them.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family service will take place on November 28th in St Laurent with Fr Paul Tinguely officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St Laurent Assisted Living Centre, CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice. Mackenzie Funeral Home of Stonewall, MB in care of arrangements.

Rest In Peace Dad.
