Obituary for Cameron Slimmon

CAMERON SLIMMON
1984 – 2022

It is with broken hearts that Cameron’s family announce the loss of their Son, Brother, Uncle, Nephew, Cousin and Friend to many. Cameron passed away at home in his beloved condo on December 24th, 2022 with his immediate family surrounding him.

Cam was raised and lived in Dauphin, MB, for the first 18 years of his life. He was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy at a very young age with muscle biopsies sent to England and Montreal for confirmation. Cam was life-flighted to Winnipeg at least 4 times. At age four he received his first electric wheelchair and would scare the neighborhood barreling down the middle of the street or flying over the curbs! He then received a ventilator shortly after. Handling these trials and obstacles he attended LT. Colonel Barker Elementary, McKenzie Middle and the Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary High Schools graduating with Honours and receiving a scholarship to attend the University of Winnipeg. Cam attended the U of W along with his caregivers for many years and was only 4 courses short of his degree in Administrative Studies with a major in Conflict Resolution.

When Cam moved to Winnipeg, he first lived at Ten-Ten Sinclair for a couple of years, then to the condo in downtown Winnipeg. Here he could get to the University easier and enjoy downtown living. He loved going to the Forks, eating out in downtown restaurants, and attending fringe and cinema festivals. Throughout his time in Winnipeg his care needs were looked after through the Self/Family Managed Care option with WRHA Home Care. Cam was privileged to have many caregivers who assisted him and became friends and family to him. Cam and his family are truly grateful as this allowed him to live as independently as possible.
Cam was heavily involved in the Manitoba Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, establishing the first Bud, Spud and Steak Fund Raiser which became an annual event. He taught sessions on “Living with a Ventilator” to potential caregivers at the Independent Living Resource Centre. Cameron played in the Manitoba Power Wheelchair Hockey League for many years. He attended the National Tournaments in Toronto and London as a member of the Manitoba Team, receiving an award at the 2019 Tournament in Toronto. Throughout his hockey career he made many lifelong contacts which brought much enjoyment into his life.

Cam loved to travel and for him the best part was the warm weather. He travelled all across Canada and throughout the USA, had a couple of Caribbean cruises with his parents and siblings and spent time in Florida. He liked listening to music, including anything popular or catchy, old, or new. He loved board games and playing cards and usually beat everyone!! Cam had a strong presence in the online gaming world spending many hours playing with friends he met near and far.

Blessed to be a Christian man, Cameron gave himself to the Lord and was baptized by faith at the First Baptist Church in Dauphin at age 17. He attended a number of churches in Winnipeg making many close connections. We take comfort in knowing that Cam is now truly “walking” with the Lord!!

But his greatest joy and the thing that made him the most proud, was when he became an uncle for the first time and he was so looking forward to being Uncle Cam again.

Cameron will be so missed by his family, uncles, aunts, cousins and all those who knew him.
Cameron once said: “I’LL NEVER GIVE UP” – “YOU CAN TRY, BUT YOU’LL NEVER STOP ME!!”
He lived his way.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Manitoba Power Wheelchair Hockey League or The Children’s Wish Foundation.

A Celebration of Cameron’s Life will be held on Friday, January 6th, at 11:00am at Rowandale Baptist Church in Winnipeg, MB.
